There is no other town in Australia quite like Port Augusta. The journey from Wilminton is a magical experience as it the road waves it way through Horrocks Pass. As it leave the pass the road down onto the plains the view from the beautifully contoured, undulating slopes of the Flinders Ranges is magical as you see the Spencer Gulf and the Port Augusta city. It is magical in its beauty and, in spring it is green and lush. At sunset it can only be described as awesome.

Yet this is not the only entrance to Port Augusta, drive north along the Stuart Highway and only a few kilometers to the north, the edge of town gives way to flat scrubby land which stretches to the horizon. To the west lie five huge plateau and there are dry salt lakes beside the road. Port Augusta is a genuine crossroads with roads heading north to Alice Springs and Darwin, west to the Nullarbor and the Eyre Peninsula and east to Adelaide.

Most people visit Port Augusta & the Flinders Ranges by self-driven vehicles. There is several car hire companies operating out of Port Augusta. Sharp Airlines have departures Monday-Friday Adelaide to Port Augusta. Courtesy shuttle service to and from airport for our guests.

Since 1881 the Port Augusta Racing Club has provided the region with quality thoroughbred racing on its iconic sand track. The Port Augusta Racing Club hosts 9 race meets and is home to more than 12 trainers. Race days are a great social event for everyone to enjoy, fantastic entertainment for all the family, and racing hospitality at its best.

Port Augusta’s central location sees it as the heart of thoroughbred racing in the Spencer Gulf, and its facilities make it a premier site for racing. With the majestic Flinders Ranges as the backdrop to the Port Augusta racecourse, it has become famous for its breathtaking view.

The Port Augusta Race Club is located only 5 minutes from the CBD and 30 minutes from the popular Flinders Ranges.

We support many local community groups and promote a day at the races to visitors both statewide and interstate. Full catering, with tote facilities and book makers on course, a day at the races has something for all the family.

Thousands flock to the annual City of Port Augusta Cup in July which is always a day of great of racing, fashion and fun. Port Augusta’s mild winter weather and fantastic location make this a much anticipated social event

The Elders Golf Classic at Port Augusta Golf Club

The Port Augusta Golf Club conducts a “Golf Classic” during the first week of August each year. This event has now been running for 40 years. The huge success of this event over the years now has it placed, as one of the leading events on the South Australian golf calendar

As of 2012, Port August Golf Week has been granted World Amateur Ranking Status.

This accreditation has come via Golf SA from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in Scotland and will lift the profile of this event to even higher levels.

Through the Royal and Ancient Golf Club the Port Augusta Golf Week will now be promoted world wide.
